Fiber Optic AttenuatorPrecision Control
Fixed and variable attenuators in LC, SC, FC types — 1 to 30 dB range for precise optical power management.

Overview
A fiber optic attenuator deliberately reduces optical signal power to prevent receiver overload on short fiber links or to balance power levels across a multi-channel system. Without proper attenuation, an overpowered receiver experiences signal saturation, leading to bit errors, higher BER, and degraded network performance. TTI Fiber provides a complete range of fixed and variable fiber optic attenuators engineered for precise, stable signal management.
Our fixed attenuators are available in plug-style (inline, male-to-female) and bulkhead formats covering LC, SC, FC, ST, and MU connectors, with attenuation values from 1 dB to 30 dB in 1 dB increments. For applications requiring adjustable signal control, our variable optical attenuators (VOAs) offer continuously tunable attenuation from 0 to 30 dB. Both single-mode and multimode versions are available in UPC and APC polish grades.
Every attenuator is individually calibrated at 1310 nm and 1550 nm wavelengths and marked with its measured attenuation value. All products meet Telcordia GR-910 reliability requirements and are manufactured under ISO 9001 quality management. OEM packaging and custom attenuation values are available for integrators and network equipment manufacturers.

Why Choose TTI Fiber Fiber Optic Attenuator
1–30 dB Range
Fixed attenuators available in 1 dB increments from 1 to 30 dB, plus continuously variable attenuators for dynamic power management.
Plug-Style & Bulkhead
Plug-style attenuators insert directly into adapter ports. Bulkhead attenuators install between two patch cords. Choose the format that fits your installation.
Individually Calibrated
Every unit is measured at 1310 nm and 1550 nm and marked with its actual attenuation value for precise link budget planning.
Telcordia GR-910 Compliant
Designed and tested to Telcordia GR-910 reliability standards for consistent performance in telecom and data center environments.
Frequently Asked Questions
You need an attenuator when the optical power reaching a receiver exceeds its maximum input power (overload threshold). This commonly occurs on short fiber links where there is not enough cable distance to naturally reduce signal strength, or in DWDM systems where channel power levels must be equalized.
Fixed attenuators provide a set attenuation value (e.g., 5 dB, 10 dB) that does not change. Variable attenuators (VOAs) allow you to adjust the attenuation level continuously, which is useful for testing, commissioning, and dynamic power balancing in live networks.
No. Single-mode and multimode attenuators are designed for different fiber core sizes and attenuation mechanisms. Always match the attenuator type to your fiber type for accurate attenuation and to avoid signal distortion.
Subtract the receiver's maximum input power from the actual received power to find the excess power. Choose an attenuator with that value (round up to the nearest available increment). For example, if received power is -5 dBm and the receiver maximum is -8 dBm, use a 3 dB attenuator.
Quality attenuators maintain high return loss (≥ 50 dB for UPC, ≥ 60 dB for APC). Low-quality attenuators with air gaps can produce significant back-reflections. Our attenuators use ion-doped fiber technology that maintains excellent return loss performance.
